What is a livestock guardian dog?

A livestock guardian dog is a dog that is used to protect other animals from external threats or preditors, such as coyotes, stray dogs, bears, or big cats like cougars. They are typically large dogs that are independent and intelligent.

A little LGD history:

The origins of livestock guardian dogs can be traced back nearly 6,000 years to the region of present day Turkey, Iraq, and Syria. Domestic dogs and sheep first appear together in archaeological sites dated 3585 BC. There are many breeds of LGD's today. Some of the most popular are the Akbash, Anatolian Shepherd, Great Pyrenees, Komondor, Kuvasz, and Maremma.

Introducing Gertie! (Gertrude when she's in trouble)

Gertie came to our farm in Feberuary 2011. She is a great puppy and has been showing that amazing, instinctive guarding behavior since she was about two and a half months old. She is half Anatolian Shepherd and half Great Pyrenees.
